Las Palmas University of Gran Canaria (Universidad de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria)

University Information, Campus and History
(Las Palmas, Canary Islands, Spain)

The Universidad de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria is one of the leading universities in Spain. Founded only 16 years ago, the University sits at the heart of Gran Canaria, a resort island off the Spanish coast. Despite its remote location, however, the university has strong ties with international organisations and other European universities.

The Tafira Campus can be found around 10 km / 6 miles from the town centre and enjoys a particularly appealing setting, being surrounding by countryside and scenic views. The Obelisco Campus lies in the busy heart of Las Palmas, while the university's San Cristóbal Campus can be found on the southern side of the town. southern part of the town and offers courses in biomedicine. Those looking for the Montaña Cardones Campus will find it approximately 8 km / 5 miles to the north, close to charming Arucas village.

The university was established when a decision to restructure the island's educational system was passed on April 26, 1989. The law was the result of a large social movement demanding better education for the island's residents. The same law also allowed other schools, such as the Polytechnic University of the Canary Islands, to be absorbed by the larger Universidad de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. The university began with 19 buildings, some of which are much older than the university itself.

Facilities

The university has a wide range of sports facilities, including an Olympic-size track oval, playing fields, a fully-equipped fitness and training gym, and playing courts for football, rugby, basketball, and volleyball. The university regularly plays host to sports tournaments with athletes from within and outside Gran Canaria.

Facilities for music, theatre, and the arts are also provided. The University Assembly Hall is a large amphitheatre where musical and stage performances are commonly held, and the Gran Canaria Gallery (Sede Institucional) holds several art exhibits every year, spanning all genres from classic to contemporary, including sculpture, artifacts, and digital art.
